Whether in guitar building or his former field of biochemistry, luthier Garrett Lee’s imagination is fired by the challenge of understanding the underlying principles of complex systems. “Lutherie is the only thing I’ve found to be more fun, creative and rewarding than biotechnology,” says Gary. After transitioning to full-time professional lutherie in 2006, Gary established his workshop in New Jersey, just outside New York City, where he specializes in double-top classical guitars played around the world by top concert artists.

“I’ve always pursued a certain sound characterized by sonority, a broad tonal palette and a large dynamic range. A rational, modern approach helped me achieve this sound, and renowned luthier John Gilbert’s mentorship midway through my development was highly influential in shaping this rigorous approach.”

Now in his 27th year of building guitars, Gary is equally committed to developing the next generation of luthiers and players. He regularly lectures at universities, music schools, festivals and guitar societies. In 2022, he launched the YouTube series Lutherie Demystified, which explores the methods, acoustics and profession of guitar building. The 20-plus episodes have gained an international following among luthiers and players alike.
